Short Introduction
Pagerank (PR for short) is a the method by which google evaluates the importance of any given site. There are some misconceptions about how it works and what impact it has on a site. This article attempts to dispell some of those misconceptions.
Myth #1: Pagerank is a whole number.

Although the google tool bar only displays the values 0,1,2,3,4,5,...10, in reality pagerank is not a whole number. For instance its possible to have a pagerank of 4 that is just slightly higher than 3 and a page rank of four which is almost a five
Myth #2: Pagerank is all that matters for getting a high ranking.
No pagerank is not the only thing that matters, things like keyword density, and the anchor text used to link to the site will also have varying degrees of effect on google (depending upon who you ask). Pagerank is however a deciding factor when all other seo techniques have been utilized, so for highly competitive keywords a high pagerank is needed
Myth #3: Pagerank dosent matter at all as far has high rankings are concerned.
See myth #2Myth #4: The formula used to determine pagerank and google rankings is constant.
Google updates its algorythm regularly to keep its results relevant, and ideally google dosent want anyone to optimize their sites for google because it skews their results. Webmasters on the other hand of-course want to optimize their sites in order to get more visitors. As a result of this cat and mouse game google updates its algorythm fairly regularly.
Myth #5: Links from pages with the same pagerank are equal
Everyone knows that getting a link to their site from another site with a pagerank of 6 will help their rankings more than getting a link from a site with a pagerank of 2.
What some people dont realize is that even if two pages have the exact same pagerank the value of getting a link from each page can be very different for both pages.
- The Pagerank benifit is distributed through all hyperlinks posted on a page. As a result, the effect becomes more and more 'diluted' if there are a lot of other links on a page in addition to the one to your site.
- Another possible reason is relavance of the site linking to you. Its best get links from sites that have a similar subject to your own
- It has become clear fairly recently that anchortext plays a major role in search engine results. I someone links to you with your keywords in the anchor text then the link will help your rankings a lot more than a site who links to you with 'click here'.
